News values are a set of criteria news programmes have to follow and use it to determine if a story is news worthy. These were created by Galtung and Ruge in 1965.
Some of the values are:
Immediacy, this is whether the event has happened recently. If the news happened weeks ago it is not classed as breaking news and therefore isn't important anymore.
Surprise, is the story unexpected or unpredicted? They usually contain a scandal or a sudden use of hard news to a community.
Treatment values refer to how a story is handled and some treatments are preferred over others which lead to some stories being preferred to others. The six key treatment values were created by Burton in 1990.
Some of the treatment values are:
Drama, usually include dramatic or over exaggerated language to make something boring seem dramatic and eye catching enough to read or sit down and watch. A hero or villan may be used to created binary oppositions.
Conflict, this is used to create drama and is when two opposite sides and shown. Usually two people’s different opinions are used to create conflict and create a response from the viewer on who they agree or disagree with.
First news story sourced from the daily mail online on the 9th of December 2013 - Man jumps to his death on a shopping trip. This is hard news.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2520753/Chinese-boyfriend-jumped-death-girlfriend-insisted-going-clothes-shop.html?ICO=most_read_module
News Values:
·
Negativity - a man has died and his girlfriend
is to blame there is no positivity in this article. Language such as ‘shouting
match’ and ‘tragic incident’ make it clear this is a negative article.
·
Immediacy as the event happened recently and the
article was made straight after the event took place.
·
Personalisation is also included, the man who
died had people who loved him and we know that his girlfriend and his family
and friends will be left heartbroken.
·
Surprise – This is sudden hardship as no one
expected it to happen, it is not an everyday event and it is unique to the
other stories on the daily mail website and this is why it stands out.
·
Conflict – A little bit of conflict is included when
the couple argue before the man jumps to his death, they argue and it is
described as a ‘shouting match’
.
Treatment Values:
·
Visuals – A long shot image and a establishing shot are used and one of them is
very graphic as it shows the man’s dead body and even though it is covered up
it is still shocking and links with the story being hard news.
·
Drama – The drama is the couple arguing and then
the man jumping to his death, in this case she is seen as the villan so binary oppositions
are used because if she hadn’t demanded to go to another shop the man would
still be alive.
·
Conflict – The woman wanted to carry on shopping
and the man wanted to go home, they both had different opinions and were on opposite
sides which lead to the man jumping.
Second news story from the BBC news online from the 9th of December 2013 - Fire may have been on purpose and intended to kill. This is hard news.
News Values:
- Negativity - Three people have died in a fire and the fire may have been set on purpose therefore negative things have happened and no positive information is included.
- Immediacy - The event happened recently and the article was wrote as soon as the event became known.
- Surprise - No one can plan a fire happening and in most cases people survive or at least one person is alive but in this case every person in the fire died.
- Conflict - There is suspicion around how the fire started therefore someone had a problem with their own life or wanted to end someones life which is included in the article and this shows conflict.
- Personalisation - Names of the people who died are given and they are described by what relationships they had to each other which gives us knowledge into who the people were.
- Visuals - The establishing shot of the video is included on the article which gives people something to link with the information given so they have a better incite as to what happened and where it happened which makes the reader feel involved.
- Drama - Binary oppositions are shown by the fact someone may have started the fire and intended to kill people which creates a villan and victims.
- Saga - It has not been confirmed as to whether the fire was set on purpose therefore the story can be developed in the future as the police uncover new information.
Extension
- Agenda - The focus of the stories I have chosen is death, this topic provokes attention as it is a hard hitting thing and people want to know how the people died and who they were so they become interested in the detail of the story.
- Institution - The first story I chose was published by the Daily Mail and the second one I chose was published by the BBC news online. The first news story was from China and was then broad casted to England to spread the shocking news. The second news story is local and was published immediately after the event happened to spread the news to inform people was is happening around them.
- Audience - The audience of the Daily Mail is people who are interested in worldwide news whereas the audience of the BBC news is people who are local and want to know news from around them as the BBC is a British source of news and information.
